UPDATE 2024-09-25 * Time sensitive: THURS. noon-1pm ET on CBC Radio
Hello Everyone!
Details are at the bottom of this post for how to view current and past UPDATEs in your internet browser, and how to interact about items.
1. OPPORTUNITY * Thursday, Sept 26th, noon-1pm ET
CBC Radio call-in show Ontario Today with AODA Alliance Chair David Lepofsky as the Guest, Discussing Disability Barriers.
If you don’t know who David Lepofsky is, please trust me that he’s significant, highly respected, and diligent, or you can glance at this bio http://www.yorku.ca/cds_grad/speaker_bio.htm. AODA Alliance suggests:
start calling before noon to get into the lineup
1-888-817-8995
If you get through, the CBC staff might ask if you’re in Ontario (i.e., the show being “Ontario Today”) so if you’re not in Ontario you might want to have in mind a good, brief explanation of why you know and care about Ontario and Ontarians.
Below are other AODA Alliance suggestions:
“Plan to describe a disability barrier that should be fixed and what should be done to remove and prevent such barriers.
Remember that we advocate to remove all kinds of disability barriers, not just physical barriers in the built environment. Feel free to talk about digital and technology barriers, bureaucratic and legal barriers, communication and information barriers, or any others.
We advocate in all areas of life. Pick one to focus on, such as:
Disability barriers facing students with disabilities in schools, colleges or universities
Disability barriers facing patients with disabilities in hospitals and throughout Ontario’s health care system
Disability barriers facing passengers with disabilities in public transit and other transportation services
Disability barriers facing employees and job seekers with disabilities in the workplace
Disability barriers when dealing with the federal, provincial or municipal governments
Disability barriers facing people with disabilities seeking housing, whether looking for a place to rent or buy”
If you can’t call in, please consider listening live or later the podcast will be in the archive at https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-45-ontario-today
Any of us can learn a lot from Lepofsky about rights, barriers, government, law, government relations, and frequently achieving media coverage.
FYI - Wednesday’s Ontario Today show was:
(title:) "What did you do to reclaim your attention?
Your stories with American researcher Gloria Mark, who has recently published: Attention Span, sharing scientific findings about multi-tasking, smart phones, and the need for "right to disconnect" legislation.”
2. New website “STOP5G Empowering Citizens to Protect their Community, an initiative of Children’s Health Defense.”
I have not yet explored it in detail. At first glance, I think it might be U.S.-focused but surely much of it might be applicable anywhere. Plus, as the saying goes, they had me at “How To Do It: Below is a step-by-step guide that outlines how your community can mount an effective opposition to an already existing cell tower,” because I have always encouraged putting thought into a methodical approach for that!
3. A picture paints 1,000 words
In fairness, it is not only the wow of the picture in this news coverage. I know how long and hard the local citizens and businesses, and other volunteers have been working to aim for this consideration.
